about sober sojourn

mission

Sober Sojourn help's people build a life they don't want to escape from by going on adventures with people they can be their most authentic selves with.

Our mission is suicide prevention.

We are not anti-drugs or anti-drinking. One in four people who take their life are legally drunk, that is why sobriety from alcohol is an important part of our organization. Our mission is to save lives.

Sober Sojourn is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are not affiliated with any recovery group or religious organization. Our events and excursions are a safe space for LGBTQ+, non binary people, women, and our allies.

history

Hey I'm Hollis Rose and this is a bit of my story. For 10 years I taught scuba diving and bartended around the world.

On December 7th, 2019, I made the decision to stop drinking alcohol because I was suicidal. One of the first things I wondered was what was traveling going to be like now that I no longer drank.

Traveling is so much a part of my identity. I have been to over 27 different countries, and live in 4 of them long term. But a lot of that time was spent wasted in bars or nursing a hangover alone, in shame, in my bungalow.

To keep myself accountable when I traveled, I created a blog called Sober Travel Junkies. When I moved to the mountains of North Carolina, I invited other people to join me on monthly hikes in hopes of one day dusting off the passport.

In my travels since I stopped drinking, I found traveling to be a true friend, the kind that holds your hand through the fire. And when it's time for the next adventure they hold on tighter saying,

"Let's Go."

what's next?

We are going tubing with River Girl this weekend. Our next festival is Shakori Hills in October!

We are raising money for local excursions such as: horseback riding, skateboarding, rock climbing, and zip-lining!
